Google Communications Company has launched an artificial intelligence program to help diagnose skin disease, hair condition and nails based on customer-generated images.

The trial of the program, known as the "dermatology assist tool", launched at the annual designers' conference, will be officially launched later this year, the company said. The program has been approved for use as a medical program in Europe.

A cancer specialist said the most sophisticated program would enable doctors to provide the right treatment for their patients.

The artificial intelligence program could detect 288 skin diseases but was not designed to be a substitute for diagnostics and treatment, Google said.

It has taken three years to create the program and has enabled the identification of 65,000 photographic data for various skin diseases as well as millions of images depicting the symptoms that people were concerned about as well as thousands of safe skin images.

In addition to using these images, the app also requires patients to answer a number of questions online.

It has also focused on the company's earlier programs designed to identify symptoms of certain types of cancer and tuberculosis.

Currently none of these programs have been approved as an alternative to diagnosing human diseases.

Google has said it searches for 10 billion skin, hair and nail polish on its website every year.

The program has not yet been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, but one study program developed by a British company was recently approved by the agency as an assistant in the diagnosis of lung cancer.

Professor Tim Underwood, head of cancer science at the University of Southampton, has said such programs have the potential to provide effective treatment to patients.

"Programs that use artificial intelligence in cancer and other therapies are helpful in diagnosing and treating patients," he said.
